I4OC – Initiative for Open Citations

Introduction to I4OC

The Initiative for Open Citations (I4OC) is a global collaboration dedicated to making scholarly citation data freely available. Through open citations, I4OC seeks to promote transparency, drive scientific discovery, and enhance accessibility across the research community.

Our Commitment to Open Citations

As a participant in the I4OC initiative, Current Research in Nutrition and Food Science (CRNFS) is committed to transparency and open access for citation data. We aim to increase the visibility of research in nutrition and food science, allowing for more robust connections and advancements in these fields.

Why Open Citations Matter

Open citation data offers crucial benefits:

  • Improved Discoverability: Freely accessible citation data makes it easier for researchers to discover and connect with relevant studies, increasing the impact of published work.
  • Accelerated Research: Accessible citation data enables more efficient research and fosters faster scientific discoveries.
  • Transparency and Reproducibility: Open citation access strengthens research integrity by making findings easier to verify and build upon.

Our Partnership with Crossref

CRNFS collaborates with Crossref to register metadata for all articles, including citation data. This partnership allows us to:

  • Submit Metadata to Crossref: Each article registered includes essential metadata like title, authors, publication date, DOI, and references. By including reference lists, we ensure citation data is embedded within our records.
  • Enable Open Access to References: During metadata submission, we set references to be openly accessible in Crossref’s system, a step that aligns with I4OC’s mission and promotes transparency.
  • Provide Accessible Data: Crossref makes open reference data available through its API, allowing researchers, libraries, and digital tools to map citation trends and analyze scholarly influence.

Structured, Separable, and Open Data Principles

To ensure maximum accessibility and utility, our citation data adheres to three essential principles:

  • Structured: Citation data is organized in standardized, machine-readable formats, enabling programmatic access for research and analysis.
  • Separable: Citation details can be accessed and analyzed independently of the original source materials, such as journal articles or books.
  • Open: Data is freely accessible and reusable, supporting an open-access research environment.

Visibility Through I4OC

By marking references as open within Crossref, our citation data integrates with the I4OC database, making it part of a worldwide network of open citations. This participation enhances research accessibility and allows scholars to explore citation networks, identify influential studies, and map connections across disciplines.
